Comer Construction held its Annual Company Dinner Meeting on Tuesday January 31, 2012. The highlights of the meeting included our 2012 work forecast, the Annual review of our 401K, Our new “Culture of Safety” kick-off and our Annual Safety Awards. The winners received a $100 gift card, A Personalized Safety Award Plaque, Safety Green Sweatshirt and Safety Green T-shirt with our new Safe Award Logo. Comer Construction, Inc. was named as the 2011 Family Owned Small Business of the Year by the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) Baltimore District Office. They were presented with a Governor's Citation from Maryland State Governor Martin O'Malley, a letter of congratulations from Senator Ben Cardin, a Certificate of Recognition from Senator Barbara Mikulski, a Certificate of Special Congressional Recognition from Congressman Andy Harris, a Certificate of Congratulations from Harford County Executive David R. Craig and a Letter of Congratulations from Maryland Department of Business & Economic Development Secretary Christian S. Johansson.
On May 13, 2011 Comer Construction was honored by Maryland Washington Minority Contractors Association as the 2011 Women Business Enterprise (WBE) of the Year for Minority Business at their 8th Annual Spring Breakfast at Martin's West. WJZ-TV Channel 13 Meteorologist Bernadette Woods was the Master of Ceremonies and other honorees included Senator Ben Cardin, BG&E President Ken DeFontes and Chairman of The Cordish Companies, David Cordish.
On January 12th Comer Construction held its annual employee dinner meeting. As usual, the chicken dinner and dessert were sensational. The new Policy and Safety Manuals were distributed and thoroughly reviewed, along with discussion regarding our website content and other new company ideas. The well attended meeting also provided employees and their spouses an annual review of the 401K plan and information on PNC’s work place banking opportunities.
Comer Construction, Inc. recently held it’s annual customer appreciation party at the Bel Air Equestrian Center. There were approximately 200 people in attendance.
Comer Construction, Inc. has recently implemented an operator training program where each operator will receive specialized training on each specific class of equipment. The training is provided by an outside training consultant.
Comer Construction, Inc. supported the Kennedy Kreiger "Stompin' for the Cord" fundraising event.

Ground breaking for the new Upper Chesapeake Health Residential Hospice is scheduled for October 16, 2009. Construction of the hospice is greatly dependent upon support from the community. Comer Construction, Inc. is donating services to include site grading, utilities, and paving.
On September 23, 2009, Comer Construction, Inc. was presented with the prestigious Harford Award 2009. The award is presented to Harford County firms in recognition of their outstanding contributions to the community, the economy, and their employees. The event was sponsored by the Harford County Government, Harford County Chamber of Commerce and the Harford Community College.
On June 12th, Comer Construction, Inc. sponsored 3 foursome’s in the Harford County Contractor’s Association’s 18th Annual Golf Tournament. The proceeds from this event will benefit the HCCA Scholarship Fund.
Thank you to all of the Comer Construction employees who joined the Contractors for The Cure in the Dick Gelfman’s Ride Across Maryland. On Saturday, May 30th, the team hopped on their motorcycles and rode the 150 miles to Ocean City, Maryland to raise funds for the Susan G. Komen Foundation. The Contractors for The Cure raised more than $6,500 this year.
On May 12, 2009, The County Council unanimously confirmed the appointment of Susie Comer to the Public Works Advisory Committee. As a member of the Board, Susie will have the opportunity to demonstrate her continued commitment to the citizens of Harford County . We know her enthusiasm and tenacity will prove to be a real asset to the Board.
After many years of service as Estimator and Project Manager for Comer Construction, Mr. Les Cox retired on May 28th. Les was very instrumental in successfully securing millions of dollars of underground utility work for Comer Construction and will be sincerely missed by all. We all join together to wish him many more years of good health, happiness and relaxation and hope he will finally catch his big fish!
We are pleased to announce that Dwight Miller, who has been employed with Comer Construction since February 25, 1988 , has accepted the position created by the retirement of Les Cox. Dwight, better known as “Bert” to most, started with Comer Construction as a laborer in our utility division and quickly moved up to the position of pipe layer. In 2000, Dwight was promoted to utility foreman and successfully mastered all aspects of underground utility installation. We believe his expert knowledge of underground utilities will be a tremendous asset in his estimating career and congratulate him on his accomplishment.
