Most site development happens on land sitting empty, waiting to be built on. This project didn’t have that luxury. Comer Construction’s site development package for the Mandy & Dennis Weinman Cancer Building at Sinai Hospital took place on a fully operating hospital campus, with ambulances, staff, and patients moving around the site every day construction was underway.
Comer Construction’s scope of work included complete site work and earthwork operations, installation of all underground utilities, curb and gutter construction, stormwater management systems, and asphalt paving — all coordinated around continued hospital operations.
Site Preparation & Grading on a Working Hospital Campus
Comer Construction’s crew handled clearing, mass excavation, and grading in a tight urban footprint bordered by active hospital buildings on multiple sides. As a leading grading and excavating contractor in Maryland, we bring decades of experience preparing land for development — including sites where there’s no room to stage material away from active facility operations.
Underground Utilities Near Critical Infrastructure
Our team installed the underground utility infrastructure needed to support the new facility. Working near a hospital’s existing utility corridors requires careful coordination to avoid disrupting the critical systems already in place. Comer Construction performs underground utility installations, repairs, and replacements throughout Maryland, including on sites with existing infrastructure that can’t go offline.
Stormwater Management on an Urban Infill Site
Since all of our work lies within the Chesapeake Bay watershed, stormwater management is critical on every project — and even more so on an urban infill site with limited room for traditional drainage solutions. Comer Construction works under the guidelines of the Maryland Department of the Environment to ensure proper sediment and erosion controls are in place throughout construction.
Maintenance of Traffic Around Ambulance and Hospital Access
Because this site sits directly on an active hospital campus, safe traffic control mattered as much as the excavation work itself. Our maintenance of traffic crews coordinated lane control, flagging, and signage to keep ambulances, staff, and visitors moving safely around the work zone throughout the project.
Roadwork & Paving
Comer Construction completed curb and gutter construction and asphalt paving to finish the site’s access points and surfaces. We’re experienced in a wide range of roadwork and paving projects throughout the Greater Baltimore Region, including sites where paving has to accommodate continuous vehicle and pedestrian traffic during construction.
